Who should use the PowerBar® Recovery bar?

PowerBar® Recovery bars are formulated to help promote glycogen restoration and support muscle protein repair immediately after exercise. If you train and compete regularly and want convenient and great tasting nutrition to assist in rebuilding muscle and restoring glycogen stores quickly, PowerBar Recovery bars are for you.

How should I use the PowerBar® Recovery bar?

Eat a bar as soon as possible after a workout to jumpstart the recovery process. This is the time when the rate of recovery is most rapid, so take full advantage of it.

To kick-start muscle glycogen reloading, athletes should consume about 0.5 grams of carbohydrates per lb (1.1 grams per kg) body weight within 30 minutes of finishing exercise. You should repeat this in 2 hours if you haven’t made the transition back to your usual high-carbohydrate snacks and meals. For a 150-lb (68-kg) athlete, that’s about 75 grams of carbohydrates immediately after finishing and then again 2 hours later. You can also rapidly refuel by consuming smaller amounts of carbohydrates more frequently if that is more comfortable. Consuming 10–20 grams of protein along with carbs as soon as possible after exercise will promote muscle tissue repair. Protein in combination with carbs may also help speed the rate at which glycogen is replenished, and help support muscle repair and growth.

How does PowerBar® Recovery bar support muscle recovery and repair?

All PowerBar® Recovery products are formulated with a carb/protein blend that aids glycogen restoration and supports muscle protein repair immediately after exercise.
• The compact and easily transportable PowerBar Recovery bar contains 12g of protein and 30g of carbs per bar.
• PowerBar Recovery bars contain 9–10 grams of a lipid blend designed to help with muscle lipid reloading, and important electrolytes including sodium (180 mg) and potassium (85–105 mg).
• Choose this bar when you want cutting-edge, comprehensive recovery and something solid and rewarding after exercise.

Why is it important to consume carbohydrates with protein?

Athletes need to consume carbs during recovery to replenish glycogen fuel stores that get depleted during exercise. Protein is helpful because it supplies amino acid building blocks needed for muscle tissue repair and the building of new muscle tissue in response to exercise. Unless carb intake during recovery is very high, carbs and protein consumed together are better at boosting the rate at which glycogen stores are replenished than carbs alone. The reason for this is that the combination is very effective at boosting insulin levels. Insulin is a natural anabolic hormone that helps the body build and recover after exercise. Thus, carbs and protein provide the necessary building blocks to promote recovery, and when consumed together, they can help speed the recovery process.
