Congrats to PowerBar athlete Amy Palmiero-Winters, overall winner of the Run to the Future 24-Hour race!
I first had the privilege of meeting PowerBar Team Elite athlete Amy Palmiero-Winters a couple years ago, and we bonded over talking about Ironmans and venturing into ultra marathons. I have not made it beyond 50k (yet), but Amy has already done a 100-miler among other ultras. While many of us were counting down to 2010 on Thursday night, Amy was racing at the Run to the Future 24-Hour race in Glendale, AZ. Not only did she end up as the first woman finishing the race, but she beat all the men too. Amy ran a whopping 130.4 miles (!!!), and in the process made the U.S. national team that will race at the world 24-Hour championships in France in May. This feat is extraordinary by itself, but there is one other small detail - Amy is a below-the-knee amputee due to a motorcycle accident, and runs with a prosthetic on her left leg. She is an awesome athlete that goes beyond barriers - not only does she have world records as an elite disabled athlete, but she has now made a world championship team for able-bodied athletes too. In her work with children on Team A Step Ahead she shows them what amputees can accomplish, and embodies their slogan of "Live Life Without Limitations". You can read more about Amy in her PowerBar profile or on her website.
