Running Inspired by the Written Word
After focusing on triathlons the past few years I have decided to go back to my roots in 2010, and am recommitting myself to running. It is not that I am totally abandoning tris, and still plan to do one half Ironman race next summer. My recent registration for the "New and improved!" 2010 LA Marathon was spurred partly by a desire to improve my PR for 26.2 miles, and largely by my reading list in 2009. My friend Terry graciously gave me "Once a Runner" and "Again to Carthage" earlier this year, and this summer Amanda lent me "Running with the Buffaloes". I believe that these reads were on a recent Top 10 list in Runner's World, and would inspire any runner to lace up their trainers and hit the road/track/trail. "Buffaloes" brought me back to my days running XC and T&F at UCLA, and made me reminisce about being a student athlete among many greats on the team (Meb Keflezighi and Joanna Hayes to name a few). It has been over a decade since I did serious training on the Drake Stadium track and streets of West LA, but I have at least been in a maintenance mode since then. Reading about the journey of Quentin Cassidy's comeback (as well as seeing the awesome recent results of "mature" female runners like Colleen De Reuck and Constantina Tomescu-Dita) makes me realize that at 32 I may still have my best running years ahead of me. Life with work/mortgage/relationship/friends may be a bit more complicated now than when I was a student athlete, but my love for running still persists. BTW...anyone have a good recommendation for a book about a female runner or team?
