Soccer: How To Get Playing Time in High School or College

It is important you understand what coaches use to determine playing time (PT). Any player who makes the team can play. The difference between playing and watching can be something small.   All components of the playing time decision are based upon the players’ ability to meet the competitive demands of the game and our immediate competition. Soccer is changing very quickly and the demands of the game change as well. Those who adjust their playing habits will play.   Considerations for Playing Time; 1. Academics - eligible and consistent 2. Mental – attitude, concentration, clarity 3. Physical – energy, competitive fitness 4. Ability – technical soundness 5.      Chemistry – harmony with teammates and system 6. Opposition – how do you/our team match up  7. Situation/Circumstances – injury, home vs. away, hometown, etc.   Coaches Evaluate Players In;  1.  Practice/Training – direct observation  2. Games – direct observation   3. Team Activities – direct observation   4. Academics – direct and indirect observation  5. Personal Life – direct and indirect observation  6.   Community – direct and indirect observation     PT – why do certain athletes play?   1. Ready and Steady – players earn and keep their positions through consistency 2. Bright and Promising Future – players gain experience 3. Injury to Other Players  4. Burst of Inspiration – coaches have a “gut” feeling/hunch 5. No Contest – playing an inferior team  6. Shake It Up – trying something new/team chemistry is a problem  7. Time of Season – getting close to playoffs
