High elbow

Ever watch the good swimmers in a master's swim session, swim team or warming up for a triathlon?  One thing many of them will all have in common is a high elbow.  What does a high elbow do for one's swim?  This helps to facilitate good body position while putting the arm in the correct position to enter the water. The first place to practice is in front of a mirror.  Watch what your arm is doing. If the elbow is too low, a flat position will be assumed.  If the elbow is high and in the correct position, a streamline position on one's side will be facilitated.  The best drill to do in the water is the finger tip drag drill.  The drill is just what it says, you drag your fingertips along the surface of the water.  By doing this, you keep your elbow in a high position.
