Put it on, and the rest is easy...

As athletes, we have a natural tendency to fall into a rhythm. We know our own work ethics and what we need to do to perform. No surprise, in between that rhythm, we sometimes find ourselves exhausted. This is where discipline comes in. At times we confuse fatigue and exhaustion with the sheer fact that we rather be in our beds than out in an open water swim. As long as hiding behind the sheets doesn’t become habitual, then taking a day or two off to recover is okay. What do I do when my pillow decides to do the thinking for me? I plan ahead. Knowing that I am going to have a battle the next day or later on in the evening with whatever is on the training schedule, I make sure I have the gear with me or at bedside. I find the hardest, but most critical step, is putting the gear on. Once it is on, so is my new mental focus and drive to “get it done.” Once your up and ready to go, fuel yourself, the rest is easy. I don’t know what the psychosomatic battle is between how the body reacts to the physical stimulation and what the mind is now prepared for, but it works. Do I need to swim tonight? Yes. Am I feeling up for it today? No. Is my gear in my car and ready to go? Yes. Will I “get it done?” Yes. Try it.
