USA Triathlon Youth National Championships
After battling a virus for 2 weeks, I finally felt like I passed through to the healthy side on Friday, the 13th. I had been forced to skip a few workouts over the past 2 weeks, but now I'm good to go. After work on the 13th I did a 38 mile ride and was pleased to see my watts and speed back to the levels I'm accustomed to. Saturday the 14th was all about triathlon. The morning hours were spent doing my own training. This included running 3.5 miles to my health club for a 2,200 meter swim and then running the 3.5 miles back home. I had a quick breakfast and then was on my bike for a 46 mile ride. It felt so good to put together an excellent 4+ hour training session. On Saturday afternoon I volunteered for the USA Triathlon Youth National Championships held at MCRD (Marine Core Recruiting Depot). My job was to direct the athletes on the run course. It was so refreshing to see healthy kids ranging in age from 7 to 13. It was especially touching to see a couple of AWAD (Athletes with a Disability) kids. This was the National Championships so all these kids were giving it all they had. Sunday started really early for me. I started my 13 mile run at 5:15am. This was so I could get back down to the MCRD to volunteer for the relay event. It is very likely that the next triathlon related sport to be added to the Olympic program will be a draft legal relay format. The kids had 3 person teams. Kid #1 would do a 250 meter swim, 5k bike, 2k run and then Kid #2 would do the same course and finally Kid #3 would also do that same course. It was really a very exciting format for racing. Triathlon is such an individual sport, but the relay format adds some team spirit and dynamics to the racing. I capped off the day with lunch with my buddy, Tim Yount, who was in town from USA Triathlon. We had a great time, as always.
