Iron Girl 10K & 5K & Broken Relay Triathlon World Championships

On Saturday, November 5th I joined Mari Holden, the San Diego area PowerBar Rep, at the pre-race expo for the Iron Girl 10K & 5K. The expo was held at the Del Mar Racetrack. It was a beautiful day and we gave out a ton of samples.

Earlier in the day my workout was a Triathlon Club of San Diego race at Fiesta Island. The TCSD hosts monthly races for its members and these are always a great time. We did a first time ever format of a broken relay. Since it had never been done before we called it a World Championship. The race was supposed to be a triathlon, but because of recent rains and runoff we did a duathlon, instead. I teamed up with Scott Endsley and his wife, Wendy. Because we are all members of Team USA, we called ourselves Team USA.

The broken relay was set up like this. Athlete #1 (Wendy) would run 2 miles, then Athlete #2 (Scott) would run 2 miles and then Athlete #3 (me) would run 2 miles. From there we transitioned into the 5 mile bike course and then into the final 800 meter run. We were permitted to change the athlete order, but we stayed in that order for the entire race. We did great and won our category which was 2 men/1 woman all over 45 years old. The winners like us all won a leather belt with a TCSD belt buckle. So we became World Champions!
