Mad Dog Race Team takes Utah State Championship!

The Mad Dog Cycles Race team won the Utah Intermountain Cup race series for 2011. After a close battle with Utah Mountain Biking throughout the season the championship came down to the final race with only a 21 point difference in the points.

Both teams showed up in force at Snowbasin Ski Resort near Ogden Utah for the 11th and final race of the ICUP series. UMB scored 152 points and Mad Dog Cycles scored 151, leaving a 20 point margin of victory for the Orem based team.

Pro rider KC Holley said of the season, "This was the closest battle we've had in 6 years or more and it's nice to take the cup back again."

Powerbar was a critical component to victory this year as the team was well provisioned with Gels, Gel Blasts and Ironman Perform. The Fruit Smoothie bars are also a team favorite for training and pre/post race nutrition.

Thanks to Powerbar for the amazing season and the victory!

Intermountain Cup Season in Utah

Summer has come and is now almost gone. With it's passing we also come to the end of another Intermountain Cup race season. This series of races, put on by Ed Chauner and his team, is the highlight and focus of our season. The races are well organized and range from the desert to the high mountains, fast and rolling to technical and steep. The variety of courses and locations keeps things interesting and makes for a challenging race season.

However now it has come to an end and it's time to focus on other events that require endurance, determination and sometimes lights!

While the team finished 2nd overall, many of the individual riders from our group made the podium for their categories for the season. KC Holley finished 1st in Pro Women showing her dedication to the series and overall consistency. Chris Holley finished 3rd in Pro Men despite a less than stellar year by his own admission. Kevin Moffitt moved to Expert Men 40+ this year and dominated the category finishing first. Joseph Moffitt also finished in the top 3 of his category despite moving to Pro near the end of the season.
Other notable series finishes:
Greg Johnson: 3rd in Clydesdale
Kendra Clark: 3rd in Sport Women
Jen Hodnett: 3rd in Spt Women (she moved to expert during the season)
Bruce Lyman: 1st in 50+ Men
Brad Mullen: 1st in 57+ Men
Bill Dark: 3rd in 57+ Men
Keith Payne: 3rd in 40+ Spt Men
Phil Benson: 4th in Single Speed
Adam Lisonbee: 7th in Expert Men 30-39
Wendy Cope: 4th in 35+ Wmn
Dorothy Gibson: 5th in 35+ Wmn

Overall it was a great season, mainly due to well-organized races and a great team. Thanks to all our team riders who rode with us this year. Still more to happen this year but I'm already looking forward to 2011. Thank you also to our Sponsors who made our team possible: Mad Dog Cycles, Powerbar, 4Life, Fibernet, Guru's, Northwestern Mutual, X-Tech, Alexanders Print Advantage, Intermountain Urological Institute, and our Coach Aaron Stites at Peak Performance & Fitness.
Industry sponsors included: Tifosi, Crank Brothers, Maxxis, Stans No Tubes, Camelbak, Gary Fisher(Trek).

Early Season Lessons

Seems like every year I have to learn the same lessons. How quickly my feeble mortal mind forgets the lessons of the past. I flatted at St. George because I was pushing the limits and ripped a hole in the sidewall of my new Maxxis Aspen rear tire (frustrating because 1. it's new and 2. I should have been more patient in my passing) - result DNF. Then I flatted at Cholla due to a thorn which probably was already there and not having enough Stans in my tire to seal it (my mistake for not checking my front tire pre-race and preparing my bike fully). - result 12th place.

So I will give you (more importantly, me) my new priority checklist for all the remaining traces.
1. Train and prepare physically so you don't suck and can actually feel like you are competing, don't worry if you are mid-pack or 1st, just be competitive where you are and work to improve.

2. Train mentally, know your course, pre-ride, train to pass, train to sprint the short climbs, train to ride light on the rocks, train so that you KNOW you can race and can let your mind master your body and push your limits a bit.

3. Check and maintain you bike completely. Not just wash it, but, clean the drivetrain, lube it, check the tires for thorns or wear and THE STANS volume, Brakes, etc. Be sure the bike can perform the way you want it too.

4. Nutrition! Eat enough and the right things pre-race that will give you the energy you need. Hydrate pre and during the race, eat a gel before the start. Give yourself a chance by doing the simple things you need to to have your body function the way it should.

5. Finally, know your competition, their strengths and weaknesses. Know who you should pass before the downhills and who you should pace on the climbs, know who will be considerate and allow you to pass and who you will need to be more aggressive with. Knowing these things can make the difference in your race.

DO NOT FORGET to do these things, Write them down, check them off, whatever it takes. That way you can finish your race AND enjoy the results, whatever they may be because you will know you did everything you could to give yourself the best possible opportunity to perform to your capabilities.
Lesson learned? I hope so!

Powder Park

Greg took me up to Powder Park in Big Cottonwood Canyon on Saturday. A good 2,000' climb to some excellent and relatively safe terrain. Definitely need to go back here again.
