swim session

300swim 200pull 3x50 with 15sec rest 12x50 5 sec rest 3x50 kick 3x100 (20sec rest) 12x100 10 sec rest 3x100 - kick/swim   The first set of intervals with longer rest work a bit for more speed and then settle into the threshold set with the shorter intervals.    Have fun!

CAAN Sports Swim Clinic

Key to improve swim technique: Head position- should be in a neutral with slight extended position of the neck. Don't move head as body goes where head does. Breathing: Relax!! When you go to breathe should only see the water. If you see wall or anything else turning head too much. try swimming with your head as above and not breath. See how much less resistance is created when your head is in a good position. CAAN Sports Winter Swim Clinics: January 22 and February 12th for more details visit www.caansports.com

staying focused

I alwasy see with my master's swim group that this time of the year can be more difficult for one to bring themselves to the pool.  It is the end of triathlon season and the start of the colder months here in New England.  Yes, it is not always easy to dive into the water, but once you are there it feels oh so good! Keep in mind that you have worked hard all year, don't lose what was gained.  Three times per week to swim is always recommended all times of the year.  You will still have a benefit of swimming for 20-30 min.  If keeping intervals short makes it easier you still have quality.  Swim, kick, pull sets are always mindless and can feel good. Goals are always good to help keep one motivated! I will post some swim sessions with my next post. Having a plan and a structured session also make getting to the pool easier.

swim session

I always enjoy the swim sessions with short rest! A session like this helps to build good fitness and is fun when you are fit.  Stick to the rest intervals!      300 swim 200 pull 4x50 off 5 sec rest 4x50 off 10 sec rest 100 kick 3x100 5 sec rest 4x50 10 sec rest 100 kick 2x200 20 sec rest 4x50 10 sec rest 100 kick 3x100 10 sec rest 4x50 10 sec rest 100 kick 4x50 5 sec rest 4x50 10 sec rest 100kick

Trick to improve breathing

I did a lesson with a woman today who breathing and head position is a problem. this was our second sesison together and she had not gotten over the h*** to feel more comfortable with breathing.  Anxiety and being afraid of the water is always an issue with adults swimmers.   For those of you who feel this is an issue try this:  swim under water as far as you can go, when you come up go into regular swim.    I had her do this a few times and I could see an improvement in her body position because the head was not coming out of the water, plus she was higher in the water and swimming faster.  By swimming under the water and not breathing is seemed to give her a level of comfort.   After a few times of this breathing and head position was not an issue and we were able to progress to other aspects of her stroke!
