Dynamo 3rd Of 22 Teams @ 2012 UNC Easter Invitational Water Polo Tournament
Spring is a time of rebirth. A time of growth and rejuvenation –resurrection, if you please….Dynamo sprang into action last weekend with a return to Chapel Hill to take third place in the 2012 UNC Easter Invitational. With a very large field of twenty-two men’s teams, winning the tournament was the equivalent of landing a 1st row parking space at church on Easter Sunday. For Dynamo, it started in the all-important maiden game, against Charlotte. Ken Beamon went into beast mode and scored four of six Dynamo goals and seal the win over a Charlotte team, who, no doubt recalls their victory over Dynamo A at the 2011 PowerBar Cup. Much later that day, the Dynamo-UNC Alum game was tied going into the middle of the 4th quarter, but UNC alum got open three too many times without adequate cover late in the 4th to widen the gap and solidify our loss –it all happened very quickly, and before Dynamo knew it we were standing in a circle trying to pinpoint what happened! In the Sunday 8am game, against the DC Wetskins, the match was won decisively by an aggressive Dynamo defense that was able to convert on the fast breaks -- letting Andy Neff and Mike Wong out-swim their opponents to give Dynamo the win. In the final game, Dynamo was clearly better than the University of Delaware team. Delaware had one excellent player, but not enough depth to provide much of a challenge. Our defense held them and the 2nd half had them scoreless. Defense was hot for 15 out of 16 quarters in this tournament. Once we step it up to 16/16 and strengthen our passing, the game is sure to change for the better.Congrats to former Dynamo teammate, Manny Torres. In just two years, Manny assembled a solid Jacksonville squad who proved their mettle with a convincing win over UNC Alumni to take home the title.Game scores: Dynamo 6 vs Charlotte 4Dynamo 7 vs DC Wetskins 2Dynamo 4 vs UNC Alum 7For 3rd: Dynamo 9 vs University of Delaware 2 More information: www.dynamowaterpolo.com
Dynamo Wins 2012 UGA Spring Classic Water Polo Tournament
Dynamo bests UCF to claim tournament title.A strong Dynamo team showed up in Athens to take home the gold from the 2012 UGA Spring Classic. For Dynamo, this tournament was about getting out to play with fellow southeastern teams, but it was also about playing together as a team. Trip organizer, Mike Wong, tells it best: “(The) scores don't speak for the improvement that was shown as the tournament progressed. Specifically defense (dropping & crashing to help out the hole, pressing shooting threats) Offense improved with ball side drives, and solid power play statistics. Dynamo started strong but became a cohesive unit by tournament end. This was an important win for Dynamo, and a great start to the 2012 tournament season. Next week Dynamo will be in Chapel Hill, North Carolina playing @ UNC where competition goes up a notch, and on May 5th competition continues on the beach in Tampa, Florida. For more details: www.dynamowaterpolo.com
Water Polo (& PowerBar) In Israel
I just got back from a 10 day trip to Israel. This amazing trip included a bunch of hiking, several runs AND two workouts with the Eitan Jerusalem Water Polo Club. Their coach also coaches the Israeli national team; three national team players also play for Eitan. They were great hosts and it was nice to see that, despite a bit of a language barrier, we communicated quite well in the pool.I had a picture of me (in a PowerBar Team Elite t-shirt, no less) with the Eitan guys but accidentally deleted it from my BlackBerry. What an idiot!Have a great month!
Dynamo Finishes 7th @ Orlando Halloween Invitational
Dynamo Water Polo Club either went 1-3 or 2-2 against a tough field at the 2011 Halloween Invitational hosted by Orlando Water Polo. Why "or"? Well, it depends on your "Trick or Treat" priorities. We'll come back to that later.Dynamo WPC walked on deck at the Orlando International YMCA on Saturday morning to the news that their three-team bracket was the hardest in the tournament. With DWPC sandwiched between overall number one seed and defending champs Miami Beach (formerly FIU) and Great Whites, another experienced Miami-area team, it made sense. So, goblins and ghouls, Dynamo went 1-3 (including two one-goal loses) to finish 8th if you "Trick" and count the SoFla B result. "Treat" Dynamo for the sportsmanship (and the assumed win over Daytona Beach) and it's 2-2 and 7th place. The Dynamo squad finished proud of their effort against three solid Miami-area squads. (FYI, Miami is the undisputed capital of water polo in the South.). A break here or there and the two one-goal losses could've been wins. Most importantly, the team showed improvement and tenacity as they had fun and continued to built the Dynamo WPC name. For complete results: http://www.dynamowaterpolo.com/docs/2011/103011_halloween_inv.pdf
Busy 2011 Season Wraps @ Orlando Halloween Invitational This Weekend
Dynamo Water Polo Club travels to the Halloween Invitational tournament this weekend @ the recently renovated International YMCA.DWPC has first-round games with overall #1 seed Miami Beach and the Gainesville (FL) Great Whites. What happens next depends on the results of those games, but be sure that proper nutrition and hydration from PowerBar play a key role as DWPC plays four intense games in just over 24 hours. Each game lasts about an hour and features rapid sprints up and down the pool mixed with the vertical, basketball-like passing, picks and drives of set offense. Oh, and did we mention the physical contact of hockey?Several Dynamo players have families in tow for the weekend, as Mickey & Co. beckon from just across the street. This tournament ends the 2011 competition calendar, but the team plans to train through at least Thanksgiving.Check back for results and be sure to visit us @ www.dynamowaterpolo.com!
