2012 Boston Marathon
Another marathon is in the books and this and it was a HOT one. The week leading up to Boston I was memorizing my goal pace mile splits getting ready to go after another PR at Boston. Boston has been really good me (2007 2:57, 2008 2:52 and 2009 2:43) in my 3 marathons there. I really started to watch the weather when I got into Boston on Friday April 13 and by the time the BAA sent out their first Heat Warning email my PR goal was just about out of my mind and the question what time should I shoot for was now in my mind and no I NEVER considered not running. After talking with my coach and friends back at home my plan was to just take it mile by mile and if I blew up I blew up. Race morning felt just like every other marathon morning but as I eating my pre race breakfast I couldn't help but think about all my friends back home and my family and what they must think about me running in this crazy heat. My goal had gone from a PR to just SURVIVE and go home alive but I was going to still push myself a bit but in a safe way. As for the race itself all going well until late in the race where my stomach started to ache (not enough fluids) and by then it really started to become a survival race. I did surge down the Boston College portion of the race as my legs were very much still there and then kicked it in at the end. It was for the first time in the entire race after I crossed the finish line I started to feel bad but my body eventually came back and felt just fine. I did get emotional inside when I crossed the finish line knowing that I survived a very hot day and I was really happy that nothing happened to me. I will admit that I was preparing myself for the worse always telling myself that the heat will eventually HIT me but it never did. All that happened was just a minor stomach ache but it was enough for me to tell myself to calm down and to just cross that finish line alive and to live to fight another day that I wanted to see my family and friends again.I'm a full week now into my 2 week recovery where I don't do any running whatsoever. I believe in complete recovery and enjoy the food that I normally would not be able to eat during my training. Can't wait to start running again on Monday April 30 but until then the recovery continues.
Technology Recovery
Recovery, one of (if not) the most important part of training can be done by taking an ice bath, getting a massage, eating a PowerBar Recovery bar or you can do so by Saucony. Saucony (another sponsor of mine) has a recovery apparel series called Amp Pro2 and they gave me the Amp Pro2 Recovery Suit which I sleep in every night and my legs have never felt so good before. Last Saturday I did a 26 mile long run with my coach and my legs stayed fresh the entire way and the next morning (after wearing the recovery suit that night) I was still feeling as if I was given new legs. This recovery suit has taken the place of ice baths. Check it out and see why EVERYTHING ELSE IS JUST COMPRESSION!
First Major long run
Today was the first major long run of my training which was 24 miles. I'll do a 26 mile long run with my coach in th ne next few weeks. I love these LONG LONG runs. Pace was very relaxing doing miles in 7-7:20 pace. Some nice hills (my coach loves hills) to keep the body going. Loving the Ironman Perform drink.
Back To Training
I'm no two weeks into my new training session after taking two weeks off from running and all exercise to allow my body to recover from my Marathon. My coach and I are very excited about my Fall Marathon. So happy to be back training and doing what I love doing most.
High School Running Memories
Went to a high school track meet yesterday to catch up with my high school coach and did it bring back memories. High School Cross Country and Track were one of the best years of my life and not just the running but the friends that I built and still stay in good contact with. I still apply everything that my high school coach taught me in my training along with everything that my current coach has taught me. If there was something that I learned from my high school running years is that you should never give up. Whether it was a training run or a race, go out there just it all that you have. With hard work and dedication you will get better and I'm still getting better in the two mile and 5k. My high school coach taught me how to train hard but most importantly how to have fun while exhausting yourself. Will be going back to my high school track on Friday to watch another meat.
