Get Ready! Get Set! Get Fit!
This summer, as a PowerBar Team Elite member, I volunteered at Inwood House's P.R.I.M.E. (Program for Resourceful, Innovative, Motivated, Empowered) Leaders. I facilitated group discussions with teenagers on topics about the importance of leading a healthy and active lifestyle. We incorporated fitness and team-building activities and topped the event off with relay racing. It was great to see them engaged in both the discussions and activities. Each participant received information on the resources PowerBar offered on line as well as PowerBar products and water bottles for participating.
2011 Indoor and Outdoor Season!
It has been a great indoor and outdoor season this year. I not only won bronze (women's 400) and gold (4x100 and 4x400) at World Masters Athletics Championship but I took second at Indoor Masters National in the 400 and 1st at Outdoor Masters National Championship in the 400.While at Worlds, it was important for me to understand when and what to eat so that I wouldn't get dehydrated and would be able to sustain a high energy level throughout all my rounds. There were a total of six races in ten days. I used PowerBar Gels, PowerBar Fruit Smoothie Energy Bars, to keep me hydrated and my energy level up Iron Girl, which tastes great, as a great snack and PowerBar Recovery Bar (after every race). The Endurance Fuel was always in my water bottle and I drunk Recovery after every round. At Indoor Nationals, we competed in New Mexico, which was high altitude. I did some research on PowerBar sites on how to compete in high altitude. The information they had really helped prepare me for my competition. The biggest thing I learned this season is the ability to focus on my race tactics as oppose to being intimidated by others in my race and worrying about what they are going to do. I learned to focus on ME; focus on my strengths and believe in my training. In order to perform well, it was important for me to remember that recovery is also a part of training. This year, I incorporated pool workouts and only trained on the track three times a week. My workouts focused more on race modeling and how to execute basically my race strategy. This is what I am going to take into my training for next year; believe in my training, believe in my strengthes and most of all believe in MYSELF!!
2010 Outdoor Season
The 2010 Outdoor Track and Field Season was packed with lots of learning experiences. This year I learned how to train SMARTER. I will not tell a lie. I tried to maintain a training regime that could have been compared to a college athlete. The biggest difference is that in college all I did was run, eat, study, sleep and run some more. Today, I am a caregiver, I work, volunteer and train. It's hard to digest, but I am getting older and WISER!!! At the beginning of the outdoor season I incorporated more rest/recovery and accepted the fact that every workout doesn't have to be a hard workout. The Result:
2010 PowerPlay NYC SuperSTARS Symposium for High School Girls
The 2010 PowerPlay NYC Symposium for High School Girls was such a success and a whole lot of FUN. I had an opportunity to host a healthy living/nutrition and running clinic. The girls had an opportunity to learn how to make smart healthy choices as well as how to use the PowerBar website to gain valuable information on nutrition and training. There were many other activities such as "How To Network" "Financial Literacy" and "Interviewing Techniques". PowerPlay NYC is a great organization that educates and empowers girls through sports and life skills training. This was PowerBar's second year sponsoring the event. Check out PowerPlay NYC site http://www.powerplaynyc.org for information on the great things they do and the programs and services they offer to underserved girls in NYC.
World Masters Athletics Championships in Lahti, Finland
Today is the first day I am able to sit down and reflect on my 12 day experience representing USA at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Lahti, Finland this summer. I was a bundle of nerves from the moment I got on the plane in New York City to the last day of relays at the Championships. You want to do well. Not just for yourself, but for your country; for your parents and for everyone who ever supported you, near or far. Not to mention my job who let me change my schedule so that I could focus on my training (hehehe). My roommates and the other USA athletes were very supportive. We helped each other get through rounds and made sure that everyone was always hydrated and had proper nutrition. I actually ordered a number of gels, energy bars, trail mix bars as well as recovery and endurance powder mix. I shared them with my teammates and they found it to be helpful, especially since it is difficult to eat between the rounds or when your race is so early in the morning. This was the first time in my life I was really focused. I was on a mission. My warmup, drills, recovery and nutrition was taken very seriously. I visualized my start, where I would accelerate and my victory. I was boxed in for the first lap of the 800 and was able to break out with just 300 meters to go. I gave it everything I had and was able to make up a lot of ground, but it wasn't enough. Don't get me wrong, I am happy to be able to achieve a 4th place finish in the 800 at my first ever World Championship. I was also just as excited to reach the finals in the 400 meters and finish 5th overall. There were no regrets because I laid it all on the track. Then came the relays. In the women, 35-39 age group, we set an American Record in the 4x100 and 4x400 meter run. It was so cool for us to be able to combine our strength and speed to work together to achieve this great accomplishment. I am presently on break but still on my runner's high!!!! I am looking forward to my preseason training mid October for World Masters Athletics Indoor Championship in Canada. Thank you PowerBar for helping me achieve my goals this year. It was an awesome experience to be able to meet and compete with those from around the world.
