Q & A with Lauren Fleshman

  • Biggest obstacle/challenge
  • Last time I missed the Olympics, I was a big baby about it, and I let that one failure slow my overall progress. Learning how to cope with failure means taking a hard look in the mirror and then moving on. The last part, moving on with it, is the hardest.
  • Superstitions
  • I am completely un-superstitious. I stick to a basic schedule, but I actively fight the urge to make unnecessary habits. My greatest races come when I go to the line flexible and ready for anything, with a deep sense that what I am about to do comes from within. Tying my shoes a certain way or wearing holey underwear would take away from that.
  • Nobody knows…
  • I was a huge tomboy and a very late bloomer. But in my senior year, I was voted homecoming queen in a scene that could have come from Revenge of the Nerds, breaking a 10-year streak of cheerleaders. Sweet revenge for years of being called a runner geek!
  • Biggest athletic accomplishment
  • Led the United States to a bronze medal at the Cross Country World Championships.
  • Favorite thing about training
  • My philosophy is “be yourself, to be great.” If I’m happy with life, I’ll train better and run faster. Therefore, I include some unusual “to do’s” for my weekly training log. This list includes a weekly burger-and-brew night, spontaneous training runs in the mountains, satiating my sweet tooth, and maintaining enough flexibility in my training schedule to be available for my husband and friends. Not everyone is cut out for weighing their food and sleeping 12 hours a day. If I did that, I’d be less successful because it isn’t me.
  • Least favorite thing about training
  • It seems like training should be a simple equation: do something repetitively and you master the task. It drives me nuts when I repeat a workout several weeks later and I don’t improve.
  • I work out to…
  • Classic Rock and unusual soundtracks like “Winged Migration”.
