Q & A with Josh Cox

  • Biggest obstacle/challenge
  • In the second half of 2003 a foot injury hindered my training for 6 months, there is nothing more painful or frustrating than wanting to do the work and not being able to do it. I got my foot to a point where I could train and was able to run two track wo
  • Superstitions
  • Coffee, a PowerBar and music usually get things going for me the morning of my race. I do some strides and before my last one I pray and ask God to help me make it hurt really badly.
  • Nobody knows…
  • I watch the same 10 minute scene in Rocky IV while I jump rope. The scene is when Rocky goes to Russia to train to avenge the death of his best friend Apollo. He is running in the snow, jumping rope, lifting in the barn and running up snowy mountains all the while Drago is getting all juiced up on drugs in his high tech training facility.
  • Biggest athletic accomplishment
  • Youngest qualifier for the 2000 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, Placed 10th at the Chicago Marathon (2:13 marathon/1:03 half-marathon) and Top American at World Track & Field Championships Marathon-Edmonton, Alberta.
  • Favorite thing about training
  • Those days when I am in the zone, when the 4:30 mile feels like 6:30. Also, constantly challenging myself, pushing my limits, welcoming the pain and then beating it.
  • Least favorite thing about training
  • Dealing with injuries and the days when I don't feel that I got everything I could out of my body.
  • I work out to…

  • Unusual training regimens
  • Some might say running 120-160 miles a week is unusual. I enjoy jumping rope, usually I do it for 30 minutes a couple times a week. I did it once for 3 hours.
