What a day in Syracuse. Although the race didn’t go as well as I had hoped, I’m still pretty happy with the results. The weather was a little overcast and it was very foggy.
The swim started out very well. I saw two guys break away from the pack so I swam hard to catch onto their slipstream. I was very content with just swimming on their toes for the entire swim. We came out of the water in under 27 minutes, which is a PR for me. Of course everyone had to run 400 meters before they hit transition which was time that was added onto the swim. I always wonder if they account for that or if the swim should be called 2000 meters + a half mile of running.
I took off on the bike right next to the two individuals I had swam with and one pro athlete. The group quickly broke-up when we hit the first steep hill on 173. From then on I raced back and forth with the pro all the way to the finish. The bike was very hilly and at one point you couldn’t see 10 feet in front of you because of the fog. It’s always an exciting and scary feeling to be going over 45 mph down a hill on a bike with skinny little tires and not being able to see 10 feet up the road. Throughout the first 40+ miles we passed all the women pro’s and a few more guys. With roughly 12 miles to go another age-grouper from my wave caught us and flew bye like he hadn’t ridden 45 previous miles. The pro athlete went with him and I lost ground after being a little extra cautious going around a wet corner. Better safe than sorry I guess. I caught back up to within 200 meters when coming into transition. It’s always an amazing sight when entering a transition area that big. In T1 there were two thousand bikes racked in their specific area. When I came into T2 there were 10 and all but one were in the first row. T2 can be a wide open and lonely place when you are the first wave behind the pro athletes.
The run started out alright. I just tried to pace myself and keep in mind that I had 13 miles to run. With my lack of run miles the past few months I was a little nervous that I wouldn’t make it through feeling strong. I could see a few other athletes in front of me and set my sights on trying to pull them in. At mile three I caught the one age-grouper that had passed me on the bike. I ran with him down the big hill and actually pulled away from him for a few miles. Once we hit Erie Blvd. I noticed that my quads were starting to cramp. I was taking in some fluids and my upper body was actually feeling alright. When we started going downhill after shopping town mall my quads just started to go nuts. The next 6 miles were really tough. I had to walk three water stations to make sure I got three cups of fluid in. At mile 12 the hamstring got into the act and really cramped up. It actually happened at a water stop and the volunteers there we the nicest people. They were so encouraging and motivational. It actually made the cramps easier to deal with. I made my way to the finish and managed a 3rd place in my age group. Not a bad result, but to know that I was in first before mile 6.5 of the run made it a little harder to swallow.
Looking back at it I realize that dehydration wasn’t really the issue. We don’t have many hills out here in the Des Moines area and certainly not the kind of hills that were on this course. I think that the cramping was caused by the large amount of uphill on the bike and the large amount of downhill on the run. I could tell it wasn’t dehydration because my upper body really didn’t feel too bad. In fact at mile eight I was ready to run hard as my upper body felt great. Of course as soon as I did that my legs quickly said no. I also could tell that it wasn’t dehydration because my calves weren’t cramping either. They are usually the first part of my body that starts to have issues when dehydration sets in. They felt really good. Oh well, you find new ways to feel pain every time you do a half-ironman. You never can tell what is going to hurt.
It was a fun week and a very fun weekend. I got to see a lot of family and friends. Bryan, Brandi, Amy and MJ have fantastic performances and I am very proud of all of them.

This past weekend was a great chance for the boys of Team Scheels to get together and race some bikes. Saturday was the Big Creek Road Race. The cat 5 race was 48 miles long with rolling hills. The course wasn’t the hardest we’ve ever ridden, but what it lacked in difficulty was made up by the energy zapping heat. My favorite part of the race was catching up to the Cat1,2,3 group and drafting off their pack. Then the race director yelled at me and told me to ride with my group. Anyway, in the end big Adam V. led the group in the final sprint with a second place finish and Neal G., competing in his first road race, finished close by in 6th. Tyler B. and I finished just behind the big sprinting pack. I was pretty tired going into the ride after running 12 miles the night before, but it was still fun to lead a lot and keep everyone on their toes. Although I did lack the energy to try any big bold breakaway attempts like I did at Clear Lake, I did enjoy ridding with teammates and joking about everything from the weather to how crappy the road was.
On Sunday an even larger group of Scheels riders raced the East Village Crit. The course was a little over a half mile in distance and had a rather nice uphill in it. 10 laps into the race Adam and I along with two other riders broke away from the pack. We worked well together each taking a turn. I led us up most of hills hoping to get a break for Adam and I. Unfortunately I was pretty shot for the previous two days so it looked like it was going to have to be another late race hard effort. Approaching the final lap I knew Adam was still with me and that if we both got up the hill in the first two spots that we were going to finish 1 & 2. I charged up the hill as hard as I could dropping the two other riders. Adam used his fantastic sprinting power once again and flew by me to the finish line. Neal, who was also fatigued from the day before, finished in 6th and Joel, Joe and Tyler all came across the line just a short time later.
In all it was a really fun weekend. I really enjoyed racing with a team and not having to worry about swimming and running. However, it was a reminder of why I choose triathlon racing over bike racing. My strength is individual effort and pacing, not drafting and sprinting. Oh well, at least it’s still fun to try.

Bluff Creek Tri Results

It was a really tough day at Bluff Creek today. The water was 55 degrees, the bike had some crazy strong crosswinds, and the run was blazing hot. Overall I was very proud of my 2nd place to pro triathlete Nathan White. I felt really off today and I felt like I really had to dig deep into the guts and courage department throughout the race.
Swim: the top 4 swimmers were all very fast besting my 5th place effort by a minute or more. I felt good in the water, but all four of the individuals in front of me come from strong swimming backgrounds. I finished the 1500 swim in 21:12 but with the long run up to the transition my time (along with everyone else) was boosted up by nearly a minute.
Bike: the first 4 miles of the bike were nice. The wind was behind us and I was hitting 30-35 mph. Then we made a hard right turn that put us into the crazy crosswinds. I've never ridden with a wheel rim as deep as my 1080 rear in a crosswind. Oh boy that was a wake-up call. I had a lot of trouble getting comfortable. The course was pretty hard with some huge hills. I was very nervous on the first hill as I felt like there was nothing in my legs. I couldn't turn my legs over to save my life. Despite how I felt I was still making-up ground on the leaders. I felt a lot better up the second massive hill and 4 miles later I was right on the heels of the third place rider Patrick Davis (2010 Miami International Tri overall Age-grouper). My time wasn't anything to be pleased with, but considering how I felt and the conditions I was happy with it.
Run: The run was very hot and hilly, which is easy to see by the run times. I passed Patrick a half-mile in and started to look towards the next runner. Mark Harms (2nd at HyVee last year and a big time amateur triathlete) was a quarter of a mile in front of me and running well. I tried keeping cool by pouring water over my head every chance I got. 2.5 miles into the run I caught Mark. Nate White was still pretty far ahead of me and I felt like I didn't have the strength to get up to him and make him work today. I just put it on cruz-control the last 2 miles as I was content with 2nd. My run split was the fastest of the day, but it wasn't anything special.
The best part about bad days is that everyone has them and they don't happen every race.
Copper Creek is on June 6 and HyVee June 13. The next few weeks will be critical.
